Kyle Bonsignore Snaps Winless Streak as Thunder in the Mountains Champion for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour
/N. Woodstock, NH — A capacity crowd filed into White Mountain Motorsports Park for Sunday’s special matinee headlined by the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. The inaugural Thunder in the Mountains 200 was a game of strategy for the Mighty Modifieds with a sixth different winner standing in NASCAR victory lane.
Fast-time qualifier Jake Johnson took off with the lead in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Thunder in the Mountains 200 with Ron Silk quickly fading on the outside groove. Johnson lost the lead on lap 32 with Kyle Bonsignore taking over the top spot as the field ran single-file, waiting for a chance to jump pit-side for some strategy. Mid-pack, Matt Hirschman, Silk, Craig Lutz and Luke Baldwin got physical for the crowd Sunday afternoon as Kyle Bonsignore continued to pace out front.
Overcrowding off turn two just before the halfway point saw Ron Silk go around off the nose of Luke Baldwin with all the major players jumping pit-side for adjustments, most taking their contingent of change tires in preparation for a ninety-nine lap sprint to the end. After stringing out once more, championship hopeful Austin Beers went around with Anthony Nocella in turn one as another championship hopeful in Patrick Emerling shut down during pace laps after a successful pit stop.
In a wild final twenty circuits, Kyle Bonsignore kept his eyes forward and his foot to the firewall, even with his rear bumper getting the full monty from Stephen Kopcik. Try as he might, Kopcik couldn’t out-psych Bonsignore with the #22 ChaLew Performance machine earning its first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory in nearly two years. Bonsignore is also the sixth different winner in as many races on the traveling NASCAR Modified circuit this season.
The 1764 Sports Bar & Grill Late Models started Sunday’s showdown at White Mountain with Brian Whalley and Kyle Goodbout bringing the field to green. Goodbout quickly took over the point and fought through three quick-spin cautions at the start of their 50-lap main event. Back in control, Goodbout kept pace at the head of the pack as Kasey Beattie and Gabe Brown began to chase him down after the halfway point. Even with Beattie looking inside, Goodbout kept his nose out front to take his second win of the season followed by Beattie and Brown across the line.
Aiden Young and Jason Ball brought the Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Minis to green with rookies Jackson Hunt and Logan Farnsworth in tow. Tyler Thompson made his way up through from sixth on the grid with McKenna Merchant following close behind. Merchant gave it her all in the closing stages but Thompson took down the win with Kodi Sabins rounding out the top three.
The Fisher Auto Parts Flying Tigers saw young lions Luke Peters and Kyle Willis lead the field to green with Peters driving off with an impressive lead. A mid-pack scuffle at the halfway point saw championship hopeful Logan Powers fly into the infield before gathering it back up and maintaining the green flag run. The green to checkered feature went 35 laps in less than nine minutes with Luke Peters earning his first Fisher Auto Parts Flying Tiger win at White Mountain with Nate Hamblett coming home second and Willis rounding out the podium.
