Both New and Returning Winners Make for Saturday Night Magic at White Mountain
/Welch Back in Victory Lane while Sicard, Sidney and Houghton Take Win #1
N. Woodstock, NH — The New England Auto Racers (NEAR) brought their tough old racers over the Kancamagus and up Interstate 93 to take on the White Mountain highbanks as part of their yearly doubleheader with Thunder Road on Thursday. The condenced fifteen lap feature saw Dave Blanchard in his 1979 Chevy Malibu take the checkers for the Sportsman while Mike Kugler took home the top Modified honors.
Makenzi Sicard and Kiptyn Aldrich kicked off feature racing for the Dads 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Division before Sicard and Cameron Beattie made contact on lap one to call the early caution. Back under green, Clayton Houghton took command of the field while Madison Potter and Gracen Gorham duked it out for second behind him. Potter and Gorham made contact coming off turn four in the final lap, leaving Clayton Houghton to take down his first Kids Division win over Evan Folsom and Chloe Doyle at the line.
The Caulder Construction Dwarf Cars were the quickest feature of the evening with Ethan Tyrrell leading all twenty laps in the green-to-checkers, caution-free sprint to his first win of the season ahead of Jeff Ainsworth and returning driver Dave Gyger who wore the #88 for a decommissioned Jason Wyman.
Richie Brown and rookie Lukee Shannon brought the 1764 Sports Bar and Grill Late Models to green while the action was hot and heavy behind them. Shannon and Reilly Lanphear went into the spin cycle early while a later restart accordion sent the 10ME of Christian LaFlamme hard into the turn one wall to end his night between two wreckers on the double hook. Back under green, veteran campaigner Quinny Welch made his way under, around and over to take the lead at the halfway point and never looked back to take his first win of the season ahead of Richie Brown and Thomas Smithers, VI.
Mike Clark started off with a tight-turning machine at the head of The Farmyard Store Flying Tigers, holding on for the lead until young Austin Sicard took over by lap five. Clark went on the defense as Owen Cheney and Cameron Ouellette fought him on all fronts for second. Clark went around to call out the caution on lap 20 leading to the Race-of-the-Night between Austin Sicard and Owen Cheney, the two young lions fighting side-by-side through the very end with Sicard earning his first career Flying Tiger trophy over Cheney with Shane Sicard barely edging Cameron Ouellette for third.
The Bar Harbor Bank & Trust Strictly Stock Minis rounded out Saturday’s racing action with rookie contender Lucas Sidney sitting on the pole. Sidney led the early goings as Donnie Baumgarnder made his way closer to the front. The lone caution on lap 22 between Tyler Thompson and Dawson LaFlamme set up a three-lap grand finale. Sidney and Baumgardner were locked neck-in-neck for the top spot those final circuits with Sidney just a touch better on the inside groove to take his first career Strictly Mini win by one-tenth of a second over Baumgardner with Jacob Roy taking third after a near spin out late in the race.
