Great weather prevailed over White Mountain Motorsports Park on its opening day with a full card of racing. An excited crowd cheered on their favorite drivers as they took to the track for their qualifier heats and feature events.
During our H K POWERSPORTS Kids Truck division feature, the cautions flew as the drivers struggled to make through unscathed, which unfortunately was not the case for the # 6 of Alex Kelley and the # 43 of Kyle Willis as well as the # 97 of Alexander Rooney. With the third caution came the checkered flag finish giving a third place to Alex Kelley in the #6 and a second place to the # 43 of Kyle Willis with a feature win going to # 47 Gordon Day in his '95 GMC Sonoma sponsored by Northeast Autobody. Gordon Day returns to WMMP and starts the new season off right with a feature win.
The WOODSVILLE GUARANTY SAVINGS BANK Strictly Stock Mini division ran fairly smoothly for having some new drivers to the track. "Mike Jr." Richards returned this year to WMMP and took home a third place finish in his first feature race in his # 4 VW. The # 99 of Tucker Williams took second place having a great first night back. With the help of sponsors like "swerving Irving" and John & Elaine Sleeper, Allan Young celebrated more than just his birthday this week at WMMP, taking the feature win with his # 24 Chevy Cavalier.
One of our most spectacular cautions came out during the BEACON RESORT Strictly Street Stock division. Coming into turns three and four contact between the # 10 of Curtis Leeman and the # 84 of Elwin Sidney caused the chevy malibu of Elwin Sidney to roll onto its roof and slide to a stop in front of a stunned crowd. The Speedway Safety Crew was on scene instantly as Elwin Sidney was helped from his harness unharmed. This brought out the red flag as the drivers stopped to allow track and EMS to check the wellbeing of Elwin Sidney as the crew worked to clear the track. The crowd was obviously pleased when Sidney showed signs that he was uninjured as we all breathed a sigh of relief. Racing resumed and concluded with the 2007 Track Champion # 63 Tom Keith taking third place and the # 09 of Steven Parker walking away with Second. With his first ever feature win here at WMMP the beaming driver of # 28 David Baron Sr. in his '86 Chevy Monte Carlo thanked everyone who helped make that moment possible.
With a new division sponsor this year the SHUTTLE CONNECTION Super Streets provided us with another heart stopping moment. Having an otherwise great night of racing, the # 88 of Jeremy Welch was running strong and competitve when tradegy struck coming out of turn four, making turn four the jinxed section of track tonight. Slamming into the wall hard brought out the caution and our safety crew as Jeremy Welch was helped from his '06 Chevy Monte Carlo. Jeremy and his crew will unfortunately have their hands full making the car race ready for next weekend as the car suffered body damage. The rest of the feature ran fairly smooth with returning Track Champion # 14 Craig Roy walking away with a third place and the # 6 of Adam Delucca taking second. Running great and returning after being gone for a while, the # 66 of Tim Churchill won the first feature starting his year off right. Churchill thanked sponsors Dumont Construction, Auto Body Works and the crew at Tim's White Mtn. Garage for making his win possible in his Chevy Camaro.
The NAPA AUTO PARTS Late Model division provided the crowd with edge of your seat racing with 17 drivers taking to the field. The top three finishers started strong and stayed in front throughout the race, dealing with lap traffic early on in the race. With no cautions to provide a restart, the fifty lap feature was completed in record time with returning drivers Dan Colby in the # 60 and Rick Thompson Jr in his # 8 taking third and Second. Chris Bergeron, coming to us from Claremont NH, raced his 27NH hard and took his first feature win here at WMMP in the Late Model division. His '07 Chevy Monte Carlo took an early lead and set the pace for all fifty laps, providing thanks to his sponsors like Garys Claremont Tire, Wizard Technologies, Ray Morin and Family, Revered Painting, Livingston Artic Cat, Main St. Exxon, McNeil Sheet Metal.
Many of the drivers visiting victory lane took time to thank the many fans who filled the stands, recognizing the ever increasing cost of gas and the expense involved to be here each and every week. The drivers as well as the White Mountain Motorsports Park family thank our fans for their continued support and we look forward to seeing everyone next week, when we welcome the PASS 150 as well as another full card of racing in each of the five divisions. The Pit Gate will open at 12:00, the Main Gate at 1:00 with practice starting at 3:00 and racing beginning promptly at 5:00. See you there!
