Nothing can beat a nice sunny day, a pit full of racecars, and loads of racefans, and that is what you saw if you were at White Mountain Motorsports park in North Woodstock, New Hampshire this past Saturday afternoon. It was the season opening Car Show and Test and Tune Day, plus the conclusion of the P.A.S.S. Tour, DJ Equipment 150, leftover from April 17th. A record breaking number of beautifully prepared racecars filled the pits, so much so that several cars and haulers were forced to park outside the pit gates.
The event, usually scheduled for Mother's Day, was bumped up to Saturday instead, leaving Mother's Day as a raindate. This proved to be extremely successful for everyone. The new format saw car show judging take place until noon for all regular WMMP divisions. At 10:30, practice began for all classes, and went until 1pm. There were no serious mechanical failures or wrecks which normally plague such an early event.
The DJ Equipment 150 rolled to the green at exactly 1:30pm and off like a flash was Ben Rowe, with Scott Mulkern in tow. Rowe led until lap 130, when Larry Gelinas nailed down the top spot and looked like a sure winner until caution flew on lap 146. Rowe made a bonsai move on the restart and grabbed the lead back. Gelinas gave it one more try, but time ran out and Ben Rowe secured the victory. Gelinas finished second ahead of Mike Rowe, Johnny Clark and Scott Mulkern.
Immediately following the P.A.S.S. event, The White Mountain racers filled the track for an hour, so that all the fans could get an up-close look at the class of 2004. Best of Show Awards were passed out to the top three in each division. Judging was extremely close, and was as one judge put it, "One of the toughest jobs she'd ever done!" The results are as follows:
NAPA Late Models:
1st place - #02 Russell Clark
2nd place - #74 Lyman Boyce
3rd place - #41 Pete Potvin III
