Prior to the night's racing, family members put together a small tribute thanking Donnie & Teri Avery for their dedicate 20 years at WMMP. All of the race teams came out onto the track and received a blessing from local pastor Marcus Corgy. After the blessing, Haylee Corum and Dylan Avery led the speedway crowd in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Plymouth high school sophomore Paige Bradly sung the National Anthem. Donnie and Teri were given flowers and gifts from family members.
The first feature on the evening was the 15 lap Dad’s 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Truck division. The 10-14 year old youth division has several new faces competing this year. However, it was the division’s most experienced driver that took home the checkers. Michael Denis took the lead from lap 1 and rolled to the win. Newcomers, Wyatt Hayward in the #26 and Kaleb Rodgers in the #4 followed Denis to the line. Hayward won the qualifying heat.
The Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Minis have slew of new faces and talent for 2013. Brett “The Jett” Rowell set sail from his pole starting position and held off all challenges to earn the victory. Shaun Sinclair in the #00, Mikey Smith in the #22, Ben Belanger in the #99, and Desirae Sicard in the #17 were the top five finishers. Heat winners were Sinclair and Belanger.
The Strictly Stock division welcomed new sponsor Kingdom Trailers for 2013 and the crunch bunch may be looking to change their reputation as WMMP’s most spirited group of racers. Tiger Tom Keith wrestled the top spot from Shane Sicard in the early going and held off a late charge by veteran racer Elwin Sidney III of Belmont for the first win of 2013. Elder statesman, Bobby Taylor of Groton, VT, finished third, Barton’s Sicard was fourth and Gorham’s Cody LeBlanc rounded out the top five. Sidney and LeBlanc were qualifying winners.
The new division at the Park this summer is the very popular Twisted Tea Dwarf cars. The Dwarfs were brought to the green flag by two of the fastest cars in the division in the #01 of Tim Anderson and the #88 of Jason Wyman. The handling started to go away from the Anderson ride about ten laps into the feature, allowing Wyman to take the lead. Waterford, VT’s Andy Hill charged from his eighth place starting position and settled in behind Wyman. The division provided the fans with exciting racing for position throughout the field. On the white flag lap, Hill made his attempt for the lead and ended up in a spin in turn three. That had cars scattering everywhere bringing out the yellow flag to end the feature. Wyman earned the win and dedicated the victory to his father who passed a few weeks prior. South Berwick Maine’s Eric Boucher took the runner-up spot, Anderson was third, Bethlehem’s Jeff Ainsworth was fourth, and “Down Town” Bobby Brown rounded out the top five finishers. Heat wins went to Hill, Anderson, and Ainsworth.
2012 Tiger/Sportsman runner-up George May of Barre, VT made an early statement for 2013 by winning the first feature by several car lengths over runner-up Scott Coburn. The #84 of Richie Lafond was third, rookie Jason Fallman of Bath was fourth and Danvill Vermont’s Stephen Hodgdon rounded out the top five. The Tiger Sportsman welcomed the new sponsor in White Mountains Community College of Berlin. May won the Tiger/Sportsman heat race.
WMMP is please to announce the return of NAPA Auto Parts to be the headline sponsor of the Late Models. The NAPA sponsor has currently six participating stores involved to include; Berlin, Littleton, Plymouth, Lebanon, Merideth, and Laconia. The Late Models put on a show right from the drop of the green flag for their fifty lap event. Travis Fadden and Quinney Welch had the fans on the edge of their seats as the duo went door to door for the first 15 circuits until Welch finally cleared Fadden. Only one caution was thrown and that bunched the field back together. Several great battles broke out amongst the top 10 racers. Stacy Cahoon and Fadden battled it out and the #66 of Timmy Churchill and the # 51 of Jeremy Harclerode had a great race for more than 20 laps. The checkers flew for Welch followed by Fadden and Cahoon for the podium finish. Boomer Morris from Barre, VT and Harclerode from Newmarket NH, completed the top five. Heat wins went to Will Avery, Mike Jurkowski, and Fadden. Fadden was winner of the semi feature.
The next event on the schedule will be on Saturday June 8th beginning at 5 PM. The N.E.A.R.C. will be at the park for their annual visit.
