The air temperature was cool and crisp but the racing was as hot as it has ever been on Saturday night at White Mountain Motorsports Park in North Woodstock. Other area racing venues have concluded their 2012 regular race calenders and several new race teams were on hand, swelling the car counts in all divisions. Add into the equation that not one of the four points accumulating divisions at WMMP have established a clear front runner and the action was non-stop all night long.
The Shuttle Connection Late Model field had 21 cars come to life out of turn four for their 50 lap main event. The Late Model drivers did not disappoint either, running their feature non-stop and finishing in just over twelve minutes. Will Avery and Katrina Canney brought the field to green and it took 12 laps for Claremont NH’s Michael Jurkowski to get his #42 to the front of the field. The racing Cahoon family obviously made the correct adjustments for the much cooler than normal racing conditions, taking to the outside and roaring to the front from their sixth and eighth place starting positions. Veteran racers Oren Remick and Bernie Langtange decide to make the trek to the top five and by lap 22 Tyler Cahoon wrestled the lead from Jurkowski. The racing was fast all over the speedway. One of the biggest movers on the night was Lincoln’s Timmy Churchill coming from the back of the pack to finish in the top ten. Checkers flew for the #38 of St. Johnsbury’s Tyler Cahoon. Stacy Cahoon, Jurkowski, Remick, and Lantange completed the top five. Heat wins went to Travis Fadden, Jurkowski, and Canney. Jurkowski captured the semi-feature.
The Avery’s Sweeping Tigers had their biggest field of 2012. Unfortunately, mechanical problems fell on the #27 of Stephen Denio, not allowing him to take a green flag on the evening. Young gun Ryan Oleson took to the front early and refused to let up scoring his third feature win of 2012. The #16 of George May, Jeff Huntington’s #24, point leader Gerald Griswold and rookie Michael Lloyd completed the top five. May took the heat race.
The Dwarf car division made their final appearance of 2012 at the ¼ mile launching pad for the opened wheeled racers. The Dwarfs ran their 25 lap feature in just six minutes leaving no doubt that they are ready take on their maiden season in 2013 at WMMP. Bethlehem’s Jeff Ainsworth and Caanan Vermont’s Jeremy Labrecque got the feature underway. There was plenty of passing as new racers Bobby Brown and Tyler Jones held their own against the Northeast’s finest Dwarf drivers. Shelburne NH’s Tim Anderson captured his second straight feature win coming from his tenth place starting position. Ainsworth, Campton’s Dave Gyger, Brown, and Jones completed the top five. Ainsworth carried the checkers in the qualifying race. The Beacon Resort Strictly Stocks nicknamed the “crunch bunch” lived up to that billing and more as their feature event was dotted with seven caution flags. There were numerous spins, crunched fenders, wall slaps, and flat tires as the full bodied V8 stockers had a hard time controlling their new found horsepower to the cooler race conditions and track surface. When the dust and sparks subsided, young gun Brandon Allbee rolled into victory lane earning his first feature win of 2012. Elwni Sidney III, Tom Keith, Shane Sicard, and Gordon Day rounded out the top five racers. Allbee and Shane Sicard won their respective heat races.
The Woodsville Guarantee Savings Bank Strictly Mini division has a hotly contested point battle for 2012 that has developed. The top four drivers entered the evening, separated by just nineteen points. Add into the mix, two of the areas finest mini stock drivers, Jason Kenison and Ben Belanger showed up for the event. The duo was trying to slow down the recent success of the #00 of Shawn Sinclair. Sinclair was bidding for his third straight feature win. Michael Richards Jr. and Benny Meurnier brought the field to green for their 20 lap event. Richards broke from the pack to establish the early lead. Some early skirmishes mid-pack allowed Kenison to stay in the throttle and may quick work from his 13th place starting position to reach the top five. The black #03 rode the outside lane and by lap 15 settled in front of the #14 of Richards. Five laps later, the checkers flew for the Groveton resident earning his first win of 2012. Richards, Lisa Hodgdon, Sinclair, and Jason Fallman completed the top five for the minis. Heat wins were captured by Sinclair and Belanger.
The Lil Ceaser’s Pizza Kids’ Truck division had the closest finish of the night. Logan Oliver earned feature win number three in 2012, just holding off the #20 of Bradford, VT’s Amanda Wheeler at the line. Irasburg’s Brandon Croteau had the best view of the finish, riding home to a third place run right behind the leaders and Gorham’s Anthony Tompkins raced home fourth. Young Michael Dennis had a few mechanical problems and had to retire his #63 race truck.
The Kids front wheel drive class had just three cars making the starting field. The track cones were pushed back by speedway officials allowing the young but experienced racers to turn their cars to their fullest potential. After the 15 lap feature, Lancaster’s Jared Plumley took home his third win in 2012. St. Johnsbury’s, Colby Bourgeios and Stark’s, Jenna Randall ran second and third. The trio turned some heads by clicking off some very impressive lap times.
One enormous racing event remains for WMMP in 2012 and it is championship night for the track nick-named as “Thunder in the Mountains”. All five of the speedways’ racing divisions will be on hand. The championship battles remain completely undecided in all four of the adult racing classes. Included into the Championship night is the PASS Super Late Models that will be making up their re-scheduled event from September 8th. The PASS SLMs are back for their third visit in 2012 and are in the midst of one of their best point battles ever. The nights racing is the perfect remedy to get you through the long winter months. On Saturday September 22nd, the pits open at noon, practice begins at 2 PM and the racing gets under way at 5 PM.
